In Europe the Fogra Graphic Technology Research Association, http://www.fogra.org, is the most important association driving standardization in the graphics arts. They have now finalized the Fogra certification for soft proofing systems and Remote Director was one of the first systems to be certified. The certification took place at our German distributor’s offices in Rastatt.
Fogra certification includes a pre-certification of various monitors, the detailed schema explaining the measurements can be found at http://fogracert.fogra.org/index.php?menuid=138. Measurements include the following:
Uniformity:
- 5x5 grid measured at white (R,G,B = 255)
- 5x5 grid measured at 50% grey (R,G,B = 127)
- 5x5 grid measured at 25% grey (R,G,B = 63)
Allowed is a maximum dE2000 of 4
Tone Reproduction:
Normalized luminance = luminance at 50% grey / luminance at 25% grey; allowed is a maximum luminance difference of 10%.
Viewing Cone Analysis:
This test measures mostly how we see colors differently when we change the angle at which we look at a display. For 30” displays there is quite a angular difference between looking at the center and looking at the edges. Twelve (12) azimuth and eight (8) inclination angles are measured at white, 50% grey and 25% grey. The allowed maximum is a luminance difference of 35%, a chroma difference of 6 and a normalized luminance difference of 10%.
The following monitors have been pre-certified, as of 12-15-09:
Eizo: Conformance level Class A
CG210/N, CG211, CG221, CG243W, at minimal viewing distance of 50 cm
Eizo: Conformance level Class B
CG222W, CG241W, at minimal viewing distance of 50 cm
CG301W, at minimal viewing distance of 60 cm
NEC: Conformance level Class A
SpectraView 2490 (new), SpectraView 2490, SpectraView 2690, SpectraView 2690 Reference, at minimal viewing distance of 50 cm
SpectraView 3090 Reference, at minimal viewing distance of 60 cm
Quato: Conformance level Class A
Intelli Proof 240 excellence, Intelli Proof 262 excellence, Intelli Proof 240 excellence LED, at minimal viewing distance of 50 cm
There is also a pre-certification for viewing booths; the following viewing booths have been pre-certified, as of 12-15-09:

Remote Director 3.6.1 received certification with the following 3 configurations:
1) Monitor: Eizo CG301W
Printing Condition: FOGRA39 (ISO coated v2)
Viewing booth: Just Virtual ProofStation VPS/SP
2) Monitor: Eizo CG301W
Printing Condition: FOGRA39 (ISO coated v2)
Viewing booth: Just Virtual Modulight
3) Monitor: NEC SpectraView 3090 Reference

The certification of Remote Director consisted of several components:
Uniformity is checked on white, 50% grey and 25% grey, with the EyeOne Pro, using a 5x5 grid.
- Allowed maximum is a dE2000 of 4, on the CG301W with Remote Director’s UCM we achieved 1.9 in white, 2.6 in both greys.
Printed versions of the 46 patches of the Fogra media wedge were positioned in the viewing booth and measured with a tele-spectroradiometer from the position of the observer’s eyes. The 46 patches of the Fogra media wedge were loaded into Remote Director as a CMYK TIFF, with the ISO coated v2 profile assigned, then displayed and measured with the same instrument, from the position of the observer’s eyes.
- Allowed maximum is a dE2000 of 6, on the CG301W we achieved 3.5
- In primary colors the allowed maximum is a dE2000 of 5, on the CG301W we achieved 1.6
Gradation (gamma) of the grey scale is analyzed
- Allowed maximum is a luminance difference of 2.3 (which is 10% in 50% grey), on the CG301W we achieved 1.2
Luminance of the white patch of the media wedge (printed vs displayed) was evaluated
- Allowed maximum is a difference of 15%, we achieved 0, 5 and 7% on the 3 configurations tested
Precision of the profile was tested by displaying1760 RGB patches, measuring them with the EyeOne Pro
- Allowed maximum is a dE2000 of 4 for 99% of the patches, we achieved 2.3 twice and 2.7
Several visual tests were performed that included various gradations, both grey and extremely colorful.
We are proud to say that Remote Director passed all tests and received Fogra certification in all configurations tested.
